TOGAF Practitioner is an exlusive workshop where a group of max 12 people work together on a realistic case.

When you participate in our TOGAF Practitioner course you will, supported by our experienced teachers, work through the complete ADM cycle and develop necessary material in order to assist a fictional customer according to a selected scenario. In this way you'll get real practice in creating what’s required to secure your projects and to lead you and your company towards successful changes by using architecture!

Why TOGAF Practitioner?

TOGAF® 9.1 is a framework and method for the creation, maintenance and application of EA. EA with TOGAF creates the conditions that a business needs in order to live up to increasing demands on flexibility and efficiency.

With over two years TOGAF training experience, Biner have educated over 500 Scandinavians. While our course participants have been learning the method, they have requested a practically focused carry-on course where you learn how to apply the framework to real situations.

So, we've developed a course just like that as a complement to our other courses. The course is called TOGAF 9.1 Practitioner and aims to provide you with such a good basis that you will be able to get started with your EA developement according to TOGAF straight away after a finished course.

We work through the complete ADM cycle

One of the central parts of TOGAF is ADM which is short for Architecture Development Method (please see figure below). ADM is a business driven method for the development of architectures at various levels, whilst also ensuring that relevant complex requirements are managed correctly. The method is used to analyse a specific area within an organisation; the Enterprise.

One main goal of the ADM is to develop a change plan and control that the correct project is started in order to realise the required value. This plan should be well established at the enterprise level as well as the IT level. The ADM consists of nine phases which process the architecture domains (business/enterprise, application, data, technique) in an iterative way.

The course has been split into two parts of 3 plus 2 days. Please refer to the course schedule below for upcoming courses. The first day of the course starts at 9am, the following days start at 8am and the course finishes at 5pm every day.

Price

The course price is 27 500 SEK (25% of ordinary price 36 500 SEK), (exclusive of VAT).
Lunch plus morning and afternoon coffee/tea and snacks are included in the course fee.
 

Which course material is included in the course?

• Trial license for Sparx Enterprise Architect 9.x Ultimate Edition.
• Trial license (1 year) of the Biner EASI plug-in to Sparx EA (BEASI v.1.0). This plug-in is especially developed by Biner consultants to effectively support your architecture work step by step in TOGAF ADM with the modeling language ArchiMate. After a finished course you will get to keep this plug-in, which enables you and your company to get your TOGAF work process started.

The course material consists of PDF versions of:

• Study Guide for course preparation. This includes information on the tool Sparx Enterprise Architect and the modeling language ArchiMate.
• TOGAF™ Version 9.1 , including Biner’s unique study guide which acts like a study coach through your course work
• Organisation and scenario description of the fictional organisation which forms the base for the course.

In addition to the above, printed material is included for:

• The Student Guide, a thorough description of each exercise including an example
• Presentation material shown during the course
• Additional scenario information needed to go through each phase

All material is in English – however the course tutors will teach in Swedish. The PDF material plus a BEASI v.1.0 plug-in file will be sent to the course participant about 3 weeks before the start of the course. In this way you will be able to familiarise yourself with Sparx EA and other material before you start your course.

N.B: This course does not include certification. If you want to get TOGAF certified you will need to attend an accredited course in the framework according to The Open Group regulations. Biner offer accredited courses and certification in TOGAF 9.1 Foundation + Certified.

Biner EASI Plug-in - BEASI v.1.0
Biner’s plug-in to Sparx Enterprise Architect provides you with a clear step by step guide for TOGAF and ADM. After a finished course you can keep our plug-in which enables you to get started with your TOGAF work straight away once you’ve finished the course!

What is expected from the course participant?

The tool which will be used during the course is Sparx EA 9.x Ultimate Edition. This tool can be downloaded as a trial license before the start of the course. You can also order your own license by contacting us a week before the course starts. Please read more about various licenses here.

The participant is responsible for bringing a PC compatible with Sparx EA 9.x. Other tools needed are those included in Microsoft Office 2000 (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) or newer versions.

The course does not cover core subjects in their theoretical form, instead there will be a quick review after which the majority of time will focus on practical work. In order to get the most out of the course, it’s a pre-requisite that you have previously studied a TOGAF 9.1 (or 9) Foundation and/or TOGAF 9.1 (or 9) Certified course. We also recommend you read the preparation material according to the guide. Time should also be set aside for self-study during the actual course in order to absorb as much information as possible.

Content

The course has been divided into two parts of 3 days plus 2 days. Before the start of a course you as a participant will get study material sent to you. You are expected to read through this material in advance in order to get the most out of the course. TOGAF 9 Practitioner aims to provide you with practical knowledge and is based on workshops and interaction rather than teoretical training.

On the first day of the course the group is divided into small discussion groups of 3-4 people. We then work actively, supported by Biner’s teachers, through each ADM phase and create practically fundamental component which are included in the phases. For this exercise Biner has developed a business scenario with a problem which needs solving. The scenario involves a fictional company faced with challenges representing real life situations faced by real architects.

Each step works as such that the teacher gives an introduction to the task, after which the participants work on the task until the group reaches a solution to the problem. The result is documented in the tool Sparx Enterprise Architect and the group is given time to reflect on their results together.

The course consists of the following four parts:

1. Initiation
Includes an introduction to the whole course plus a review of the phases (Pre) Preliminary (A) Archtecture vision.
Based on the scenario, the students will define the frames for the change initiative and express a change vision.

2. Definition
Includes exercises related to the phases (B) Enterprise Architecture, (C) Information System Architecture & (D) Technique Architecture. Teknikarkitektur. Based on the vision, the students are asked to analyse the scenario further and model all four architecture domains. This involves defining the present architecture plus identifying and defining the gaps which will constitue the change initiative of the planning phases.

3. Planning
Includes the exercises of phases (E) Opportunities and Solutions & (F) Migration Planning.
Once the studets have consolidated the identified gaps, these will be prioritised and changed into a migration plan and a solution which matches the set goals.

4. Governance
Includes the exercises of phases (G) Implementation Governance & (H) Change Management.
The architecture project is now finished and surveillance and control of the implementation is started. In this part students practice these elements. Other areas are also discussed which affect others, such as architecture governance.

During each phase various exercises are processed. Each exercise follows TOGAF 9.1 and our scenario.

The goal of the course is for the participant to…

• improve governance and priorities of project using well proven Enterprise Architecture (EA) and TOGAF methods
• learn to, based on a realistic business scenario, work through the whole of the TOGAF 9.1 ADM cycle plus develop the necessary deliverables, views and building blocks of TOGAF 9.1.
• learn to develop and document architecture using a modelling tool (Sparx EA 9.x). 
• learn to use international standards when describing architecture, such as ArchiMate.

After a finished course the participant will have...

• gained knowledge in practically applying Enterprise Architecture according to TOGAF.
• obtained templates and views configured in the modelling tool (Sparx EA) in accordance with TOGAF ADM and ArchiMate.

• gained a strong foundation to get started with EA in their own workplace. 

 

Pre-requisites

This course is aimed at architects and project leaders wanting to gain an understanding of the work process of an architect driven enterprise development. To get the most out of the course our pre-requisite is that participants need to have previously studied the TOGAF 9 Foundation course. Previous experience in a modelling tool such as Sparx Enterprise Architect or another such tool is an advantage, although not a pre-requisite.
